What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a synthetic tooth root usually made of titanium or titanium alloy that can replace one or more missing teeth. A completed dental implant restoration is made up of three parts:

  1. The Post: The implant post is usually less than half an inch long and is inserted into the jawbone to replace missing tooth roots.
  2. The Abutment: This piece connects the post to the prosthetic.
  3. The Prosthetic: The restoration part of the implant is the visible portion, consisting of a crown, bridge, or denture.

Why Do I Need a Tooth Implant?

The longer you live with a missing tooth or teeth, the more your gum ridges and bone can shrink, known as atrophy. When the human body is not using a part, such as the bone holding your teeth, it will take the calcium for use in other body parts that need it.

Dental implants provide essential stimulation to your jawbone and prevent bone atrophy. The implants also help keep your teeth in alignment, preventing issues such as uneven wear and jaw pain. In a process called osseointegration, the implant posts permanently fuse with your jawbone, helping maintain your bite structure and promoting your oral and overall health.

What Happens in the Dental Implants Process?

Your experience will vary depending on your situation, such as whether you get a dental implant for one tooth or replace multiple teeth. We start with the consultation, where we will do an extensive oral exam. We use advanced software imaging with CT scanning and panoramic x-rays. These precise images allow our dentist to evaluate your oral structure in three dimensions, showing bone and nerve location, bone quality, and bone density.

Sometimes, the best areas to place dental implants won't have sufficient bone density to support the implants. In these cases, performing a bone graft before implant surgery is necessary. Dr. Shartzer has extensive experience performing bone grafting procedures to strengthen your jawbone, supporting the stability of your implants. If you need other, more complex pretreatments, such as a sinus lift, we are happy to refer you to a skilled oral surgeon.

Once we determine you are a good fit to receive dental implants and have performed any necessary pretreatments, we can proceed with implant placement. We have a skilled anesthetist who will help with IV sedation during your surgery. This way, we can efficiently adjust the level of sedation throughout the procedure to maximize your comfort. It can take up to six months for osseointegration and healing to complete, at which point Dr. Shartzer will place your custom restoration. The timeframe for the entire process will vary depending on the rate of healing and your unique needs.

Comprehensive Dental Implant Options

Dr. Shartzer aims to deliver excellence and innovation to his implant dentistry. He is dedicated to the precision and artistry required to craft a beautiful smile and create natural-looking restorations.

We strive for precise planning and placement of implants and hold ourselves to the highest standard with quality materials. The best treatment for you depends on your unique situation, and Dr. Shartzer is happy to explain what options are available and which is best for you. Our practice offers a wide range of dental implants, including:

Single Implants: If you have a missing tooth or need a tooth extracted because it's beyond repair, a dental implant offers a permanent solution. Our dentists will provide a single implant and crown to create a fully functional tooth.

Implant-Supported Bridges: We can also use dental implants to support a fixed bridge in cases where patients have a few missing teeth in a row. Implant-supported bridges remove the need for altering healthy neighboring teeth.

Implant Dentures: Dental implants can be especially transformative for patients who have lost all their teeth and depend on removable dentures. Implant-supported dentures offer a stable, aesthetically pleasing, and permanent alternative to removable dentures. Dr. Shartzer will substitute the whole arch of teeth with a custom prosthetic.

Overdentures: This type of implant-supported denture offers many of the same advantages as fixed dentures. Instead of being permanently affixed to the implants, they snap in place, offering added stability and comfort compared to traditional removable dentures.

All-on-4®: This innovative treatment method can support an entire arch of teeth with only four dental implants for patients who qualify. Each implant is carefully placed and angled to evenly distribute chewing force, allowing it to stay secure and stable for many years. This option can be economical and efficient and offers reduced healing time compared to traditional dental implants.
